Construction Machinery Towing: Safely Moving the Tools of the Trade

Across Aurora and all of Ontario, the constant hum of progress is powered by heavy machinery. Bulldozers, excavators, skid steers, and loaders are the workhorses that build our homes, roads, and communities. But these powerful machines have one major limitation: they aren't designed to travel on public roads. Getting this vital equipment from the rental yard to the job site, or from one project to the next, presents a significant logistical challenge. This is where construction machinery towing comes in.

This highly specialized transport service is the critical link in the construction timeline, ensuring that the right equipment gets to the right place, safely and on time. At Pars Towing, we are experts in heavy equipment hauling, providing the specialized trucks, trailers, and operational expertise needed to move the tools of your trade throughout the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.

What is Construction Machinery Towing?

Often referred to as equipment hauling, machinery floating, or heavy equipment transport, this service is a specialized branch of the heavy-duty towing industry. It involves using specific types of trailers and powerful trucks to legally and safely transport off-road, oversized, and overweight construction machinery.

Unlike a standard tow for a broken-down car or truck, machinery towing is a planned, logistical operation. It requires an in-depth understanding of the equipment being moved, strict adherence to Ministry of Transportation (MTO) regulations, and a meticulous approach to loading, securing, and transport. The goal is not just to move a machine, but to do so without any risk of damage to the equipment, the transport vehicle, or public property.

What Types of Machinery Do We Transport?

Our specialized fleet is equipped to handle a vast range of construction and industrial equipment. If it's used on a job site, chances are we can move it. Our services are essential for:

  • Skid Steers and Compact Track Loaders: Versatile and essential on almost any site.

  • Mini and Full-Sized Excavators: From compact models for tight spaces to larger machines for major earthmoving.

  • Bulldozers: The primary movers of dirt, rock, and debris.

  • Backhoes: The multi-purpose tool for digging, trenching, and loading.

  • Forklifts and Telehandlers: Crucial for lifting and moving materials around a site.

  • Scissor Lifts and Boom Lifts: Providing aerial access for workers and materials.

  • Rollers and Compactors: Used for paving and foundation preparation.

  • Paving Equipment: Including asphalt pavers and milling machines.

  • Generators, Compressors, and Light Towers: Essential support equipment for any project.

The Specialized Equipment and Process for Safe Transport

Moving a 30-ton excavator is nothing like towing a car. It demands a specific set of tools and a precise, multi-step process honed by experience.

1. The Right Trailer is Key

The foundation of any successful equipment move is the trailer. The most common and effective type is the lowboy trailer, often called a "float" in Canada.

  • Why a Lowboy? A lowboy trailer has a deck that is extremely low to the ground. This offers two major advantages: First, it creates a much lower, safer ramp angle, making it easier to drive or winch wheeled and tracked machinery onto the deck. Second, the low height is crucial for transporting tall equipment like excavators, ensuring they can safely pass under bridges and power lines.

For smaller equipment like skid steers, a heavy-duty tilt-and-load flatbed or a deck-over trailer may be used.

2. The Loading and Unloading Process

This is a delicate operation that requires an experienced operator. The machine must be driven or winched onto the trailer deck slowly and carefully. The operator must have an expert understanding of the machine's centre of gravity to ensure it is positioned correctly on the trailer for optimal weight distribution, which is critical for safe handling on the road.

3. Securement: The Most Critical Step

Once the machine is loaded, it must be completely immobilized. This is the most important step for ensuring a safe journey. An improperly secured machine can shift, or even fall off the trailer, causing a catastrophic accident. Our process involves:

  • High-Grade Chains and Binders: We use heavy-duty, rated chains and binders to lock the machine to the trailer's frame.

  • Correct Tie-Down Points: Every piece of machinery has specific, manufacturer-designated points on its frame that are designed for securing it during transport. Using these points is essential to avoid damaging the machine's body or hydraulic components.

  • Securing Attachments: All moving parts, such as an excavator's boom, arm, and bucket, or a backhoe's loader, must be lowered, secured, and often chained down independently to prevent any movement.

4. Logistics, Permitting, and Route Planning

Moving heavy and oversized equipment on Ontario's roads is strictly regulated. Part of our professional service is managing this complex administrative and logistical work. This includes:

  • Permitting: For loads that exceed standard dimensions (width, length, height) or weight limits, we secure the necessary permits from the MTO.

  • Route Planning: We meticulously plan the route to avoid low bridges, roads with weight restrictions, and areas with tight turns that cannot accommodate a long trailer.

  • Pilot/Escort Vehicles: For oversized loads, the law requires pilot vehicles (often called "escort cars") to travel in front of and/or behind the transport truck to warn other drivers. We arrange and coordinate these services.

When is Professional Machinery Towing Needed?

Contractors, rental companies, and site managers in Aurora and across Ontario rely on our services for several key reasons:

  • Moving Equipment Between Job Sites: The most common need, ensuring a seamless transition from a completed project to a new one.

  • Transporting New or Rented Machinery: Getting equipment from the dealership or rental yard to where it's needed.

  • Moving Broken-Down Equipment for Repair: When a machine breaks down on-site, it needs to be transported to a specialized heavy-equipment mechanic.

  • Seasonal Relocation: Moving equipment to a storage facility during the off-season.
